NEWSFLASH:
UPDATE: Backstreet is not closing! Apparently there was some dispute between Moses and Murray and Moses is taking back control of the bar and is going to continue to run it as Backstreet. According to my source "Backstreet will continue to be open and will be better than ever." It WILL be open this Saturday.
So basically the management is just changing. I'm happy because I love this bar. I'm not taking sides in this, I just want to see a thriving gay nightlife in Detroit. I don't know exactly what the dispute was about, I want to stay out of it. I continue to support Menjo's, I think they are doing a fine job there. Backstreet and Menjo's are two of my favorite bars and I want to see them both continue and thrive in the future. As far as the personalities involved, both have been kind to me and I'm remaining neutral like Switzerland!

LOVE YOUR SITE ,finally ..
ReplyDeleteBar owners need to come together in this economic downturn ,instead they fight and bicker who,s more popular ,etc. I know it's hard but in the end we are all the same people... Keep up the good work Chris
ReplyDeleteI have no interest in stirring any drama between all these guys fighting over backstreet. However I do have 1 question. Is this the week backstreet is open or closed? I say this because on April 21st they were open after they kicked out their managers. Then on April 28th they were closed again. Then on May 5th they were open again and now their website says they are closed this Saturday May 12. I am so confused considering the owner Tom Moses stated on this website that backstreet is gay and will remain open and gay. Urgh!!
ReplyDeleteNice thought, Chris, about wanting Backstreet to be open but is not going to happen as we all see at this date and since your posting. Moses is too evil and greedy to deal forthright with the gay community. You provide good service and info here and hope people continue to post and not fight but there will always be jealous and vindictive bar-owners. There always has been since Andy Karagas of The Woodward and beyond.
ReplyDeleteSo is the place open or closed? If open, what days, location, cover, etc. Also, is it gay or str8? Do they have a website? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteOpen, closed or dead? Hasn't been operatng in months, telephone disconnected and eviction notice on the door. Anybody want to take a guess?
ReplyDeleteLOL ....it's clear to see this Backstreet thing is a joke. Ferndale at the Karma Club? Now Backstret at Ice of Hamtramck? Can't get his own venue, he has to suck around other bars. Doc Tom, Doc Tom.. get a LIFE ! Backstreet is dead, you killed it with your dirty dealings going back over 10 years. And you still break the law and defy following the MLCC rules. Canceled last weeks "opening" and WE ALL predict the same cancelation for Jan 23rd, or worse, no one will show. You just don't get it, Doc Tom. You lied, stole from and alienated the gay community long enough. Get out of town and do us a favor.
ReplyDeleteSo I see Murray Hodgson and Peter Hendrickson have been indicted and bound over for trial in Criminal Cicuit Court in Detroit, March 7, 2013. Must have been the items they stole from Club Ice when they weren't being watched. Wasn't that what happened with the original Backstreet when Murray and Tom Moses stole all that stuff from Backstreet in 2000? They moved it all to Legends and never got caught. They attempted to peddle liquor to other bars and some friends. Any takers? well, we don't know yet as they haven't stepped forward. Let's see if they can fool this jury too.
